Stewart Island
Stewart Island
Stewart Island (Rakiura or Glowing Skies) is New Zealand's third-largest island, 30 kilometers south across Foveaux Strait.
It's coastline is deeply creased by Paterson Inlet, Port Pegasus, and Mason Bay. The island is generally hilly and densely forested.
Almost all the island is owned by the New Zealand government and over 80 per cent of the island is set aside as the Rakiura National Park.
The few permanent residents live in Oban, the only settlement on the island.
