Fiordland is located in the south-western corner of the South Island of New Zealand and is sparsely populated. It has steep, ocean-flooded western valleys called fiords or sounds.
There are a number of fiords including Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, Dusky and Chalky.
The climate is dominated by the Southern Alps and has a very wet climate with annual average of 200 rainy days and has a very high annual rainfall i.e. 8000mm in Milford Sound
